Haretown and Tortoiseville are 39 miles apart. A hare travels at 10 miles per hour from Haretown to Tortoiseville, while a tortoise travels at 3 miles per hour from Tortoiseville to Haretown.

If both set out at the same time, how many miles will the hare have to travel before meeting the tortoise en route?

It can be solved without an equation.
in the first hour - Hare travels 10km & tortoise 3km =13km
in the second hour - Hare travels 10km & tortoise 3km =13km
in the third hour - Hare travels 10km & tortoise 3km =13km
so total=39km

So Hare has to travel 30 km (10 +10 + 10)
